Teddy's First Cake - initial illustrations

These are some of the illustrations i've worked on today, not finalised yet because i need to consult with the rest of my group but you can see the general ideas i've got. The character has been drawn with my left (wrong) hand to get a sense of childhood innocence/ naivety, then worked on digitally. All of the textures were either hand-created by me or were found objects that i scanned in....

Top to bottom is the order in which i produced the images in, working with new ideas each time.
Any suggestions of how to improve/what to change/colour choices etc would be greatly appreciated seeing as this is the first time i've ever done anything like this.....

  1. The top black and white example was my first illustration with all of the textures added in, it was pre-colour-overlay and is/was not intended to go into the book as a monochrome piece. I just posted it here to get a sense of the process of my work... =)

  2. I really like the monochromatic piece. I believe childrens books can employ darker elements too, a macabre cooking book is quite an abstract concept.
