Tape designs

I've got a few blank tapes and i want to draw on them but i don't want to ruin them so i hand drew a few designs....

I like this design, it looks as though the lined paper has been stuck on (although i drew it) and it makes you want to touch it. If i just get the perferrated/spiral holes bit right then it will look better.

This bottom design gave me the idea of working on a larger scale tape and making a collage of type and doodles related to mix-tapes, that's next on my 'to do' list so I shall keep you posted...

Type with Tape

I've been looking at music and mixtapes over the last few days, i truely miss the fact we don't have tapes anymore, especially mixtapes. I love the idea that someone would sit for hours with a radio and record a tape, especially in the romantic sense when it would have been made as a present. It's not the same now with CD's and downloads, there isn't nearly as much meaning in it.

Anyways, i stupidly decided to try and 'write' with the tape from a cassette, it was very fiddly and difficult to manipulate clear letter shapes and so it didn't work as well as i'd hoped but at least i gave it a go!

I think if i would have done it on a more interesting background it may have worked better, i might come back to this idea later on.



A creative trip to Naarrwich

I went to Norwich on Thursday, spent ages in a film shop (saw some old posters from the ICA and a million books i'd love to buy!), bought some piggy earphones and saw lots of Graphics- related stuff along the way...

 

I bought this t-shirt and i thought Paris was erm 'groping' herself, until my brother informed me that it's actually Minnie Mouse, standing behind her that's doing the feeling... It put a new spin on Disney for me!! Anyone looking at Disney interested??.. haha

As Paris would say: "That's so haawwt!"

I also got this 'What the Dunk' keyring which i made into a necklace, they had about 20 different shoes, i could have got seriously carried away! The detail is amazing, real shoelace, inside sole detail, Nike sole design, hand painted detail and a moveable tongue. I love it!

 

 

The naff quality of these pictures don't do it justice but i shall no doubt be wearing it on monday so you can all 'av a butchers' then! =)

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

And last but not least, i saw a Shepard Fairey wall out the shop 'Catfish', i doubt he actually did it in person but anyways it shows how far spread his 'Obey' designs have travelled.

There was smaller detail with the Giant faces built in and bold, repeated patterns both in red and black on each side. I liked how the main poster was ripped and formed the middle panel, it reminds me of a totem pole. The naturally worn quality and the facet that someone else has tagged (really badly) on top gives it that genuine street aesthetic and made me like it even more. I wonder how many people walk past it each day and don't give it any thought or recognise the artist. They would know Fairey if you said 'he did the Obama poster' but ironically not for this 'Obey' piece that was how he started out. It's kind of made me think Fairey's turned into a sell-out. Silly man....

As i said in my essay presentation, art is everywhere. My trip on Thursday proved that. Literally!

If only Lego was American!...

If Lego was American, i'd be sorted for this project! But it's not, it's Danish... That said, i have this minifigure at home and i need to do something with it, it's perfect! I'm thinking, start with a photo and see where it goes! I'll keep you posted...

Pretty irrelevant, i was looking at Nike shoes for one of my illustrations, but i came across these shoes and they'd be amazing if they were put into production!... (In fabric/leather form of course!)

Another 'idea'...

Ideas are great but i need to actually sit down and do them instead of just assuming they'll look rubbish and avoiding them!!!

That said..... I remember a piece by Mr Bingo that i came across last year (but i can't find it anywhere now..) that was like the paper dolls you used to get with the fold-on clothes with tabs. He did a corner shop version with contents and shop keepers and i thought i could translate this idea for my project by having a figure and a hip-hop inspired outfit. I could make it as if it was intended to be used i.e: make scale clothing with tabs and 'cut here' lines or i could just draw the necessary parts arranged in an 'organised' sort of way. Like this....

However i do it, i want to use bold, clear lines, like Mr Bingo but perhaps experiment with different thicknesses of pens and see what works best.

A bit of encouragement..??

So i still haven't done anywhere near as much as i would have liked for my American project, i feel like everything i'm drawing is - to put it bluntly- crap!... My bin pile is huge, whilst my sketchbook is thin.. =(
Although i found this picture, which isn't perfect but still works. It's given me a teeny tiny bit of confidence that perhaps i don't need to be a Mcbess, Legno, Mr Bingo, Giant etc etc when i'm only in my second project....!!

I don't like the text but the scruffy line work is definately something i could work with...

I also came across this.....



....which i think is from one of Jay-Z's album covers. Using letters to create images is a somewhat over-used techinque i feel but it works here. It's given me the idea to try and use song lyrics, rather than just letters and shape them into an illustration, instead of just having pages of text.. Also i'm going to raid my brothers (mahoosive) CD collection because i think there is quite alot of album art that could inspire me and will be relevant seeing as i seem to be going down the route of music/hip hop/ streetdance...
